Endometriosis is where the endometrium (lining of the uterus) is found in abnormal locations outside the uterus. These new locations then respond in the same way as the normal lining of the uterus to the menstrual cycle. The internal bleeding that occurs with each cycle then leads to the formation of blood-filled cysts. So the affected organs then continue to grow with each menstruation.
It is estimated 15% of women will develop this disease during their menstruating years. They are on average diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 40.
Most women take a long time in getting diagnosed. This is because many of us believe that extreme pain is a normal side effect of menstruation.
